LESSON 10: DEMONSTRATIONS IN TEACHING

Demonstration involves showing by reason or explaining or making clear by use of examples. In teaching through demonstration, students are set up to potentially conceptualize class material more effectively. And also, demonstrations are used to clearly show or portray something. But then, we should put in mind that there are many things to consider in giving demonstrations in teaching.

One of the factors in giving demonstrations is that the demonstrator must know his or her audience. One of the best things he/she can do is try to physically engage to her/his audience. It is also important to build a good rapport to the audience so that the entire demonstration would be smoothly sailing. Another factor is that to find a topic or a material that would fit the audience.Find out not only the topic, but where this topic fits into the course outline. Better yet, find out what textbook they use and find/borrow a copy so you know what the students will be seeing.

The third factor is to used visuals effectively. The number one way to lose students is to hit them with a block of text or a non-stop lecture. There are probably two main possibilities of visuals for this demonstration: power point or writing on a board.

The last but not the least is that before giving demonstrations, we should have a practice on it before the demonstrator face his/her students. Why? For the demonstrator to feel confident while she/he is giving the demo. And to effectively give the information she/he needs to give and foster.
